What is marriage registration?
Marriage registration is the process of getting your marriage officially recorded by the government and obtaining a marriage certificate. It is meant for couples who are already married — for example after a temple wedding, an Arya Samaj ceremony or a social function — and now need the legal certificate. The certificate is the single official proof of your marriage, and it is required for a growing list of everyday needs, from a passport to a spouse visa to a joint bank account. If you are already married and just need the certificate, you can order marriage registration online now — free to order, and you pay only after the certificate is ready.

Why you should register your marriage
Registration is not just a formality — in many situations it is essential. A registered marriage certificate is needed for a passport with spouse details, a spouse or dependent visa, joint bank accounts, insurance nominations, property and inheritance matters, name change after marriage, and to prove the marriage in any legal or official context. A ceremony alone, without a certificate, often is not accepted by these offices. Registering early saves you from a last-minute rush when a visa or passport deadline appears — and since ordering is free with no advance payment, there is no reason to delay.

Under which Act is your marriage registered?
Your marriage is registered under one of two laws, and the right one is usually decided by how you married:
Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. If both partners are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist and were married by a Hindu/Vedic ceremony, registration is done under this Act. It is quicker because there is no notice period.
Special Marriage Act, 1954. This secular route is used for civil marriages and for inter-caste or inter-religion couples. It involves a 30-day notice, so it takes longer. If you have not yet married and are inter-faith, you would typically do a Special Marriage Act registration as a fresh court marriage.
We confirm the correct Act for your situation on the first call, so you never apply under the wrong one and lose time.

The online e-District process
The Delhi government handles marriage registration through its e-District portal. In short, you create a citizen account, select the Registration of Marriage service under the Revenue Department, fill in both spouses' details, upload the required documents, verify your mobile with an OTP, and pay the fee online. The system then lets you book an appointment at the SDM office. After the in-person verification, the certificate is issued and can be downloaded online from the same portal.
The portal is straightforward in theory, but small errors — a mismatched name, a wrong document format, an appointment at the wrong SDM, or an incomplete affidavit — are what cause most rejections. We handle the entire online application accurately for you, so it clears the first time. Order online and we take over the portal work, free, pay after work.

Marriage registration vs court marriage — which do you need?
If you are already married (temple, Arya Samaj or social wedding done), you need marriage registration — just the certificate. If you are not yet married and want to marry before the registrar, you need a court marriage, where the wedding and the registration happen together. Both give you the same legal certificate. If you are unsure which applies to you, ask us — it takes one minute to confirm on a call.

NRI and out-of-country marriage registration
If one spouse is an NRI or lives abroad, the marriage can still be registered in Delhi, with a few additional documents such as the passport and visa. We regularly manage NRI marriage registration, coordinating over email and video call, attending the office on your behalf where possible, and arranging apostille or attestation of the certificate for use abroad.

What the marriage certificate is used for
Your registered certificate is the key that unlocks a long list of needs: a passport with spouse details, a spouse/dependent visa, a joint bank account and loans, insurance and nominee changes, property and inheritance, name change after marriage, and proof of marriage in any official matter. If it is ever lost, we can obtain a duplicate certificate, and any spelling mistake can be fixed through a certificate correction.

Common mistakes that delay registration (and how we prevent them)
The usual culprits: a name spelled differently on Aadhaar and the wedding card, a date of birth that does not match between two proofs, marriage evidence that the office does not accept, an affidavit in the wrong format, a witness without PAN, or an appointment booked at the wrong SDM. Because we register marriages every day, we catch all of these before submission — which is why our files are cleared the first time. That is a large part of what you are paying for, and you pay only after the work is done. Ready? Order your marriage registration now.
